Soft spoken, 43 year old Janet Jackson spoke for the first time since her brother Michael Jackson's death, in an exclusive interview with Robin Roberts, on the prime time weekly program, 'In the Spotlight'.
Michael may have been eight years older than his sister Janet Jackson, but the age difference did not stop them from being the closest of siblings. This closeness was evident in the affectionate names the two had for each other. Michael was simply "Mike" to Janet, while Janet was always "Dunk" to Michael. Janet Jackson told Robin Roberts in her interview that, "I was always the little sister that had his, (Michael's), back."
The last time Janet Jackson saw her brother alive was a few days before her birthday. Robin Roberts asked Janet what her fondest memory of that final visit was, "I remember him making me laugh." was Jackson's reply.
In her interview, Robin Roberts asked Janet Jackson about the day she learned of Michael's death.
"I was at my house in New York, you know just another day, another morning...I called everyone. I spoke to my mother...I spoke to Tito...I spoke to La Toya...but I didn't know the severity of it. I tried calling again and that's when I found out he was no longer...I couldn't believe it, it didn't ring true to me...It's still so difficult for me to accept what is...it's hard."
At this point in Janet Jackson's interview she asked for forgiveness of Robin Roberts. "I haven't talked about this with anyone." Janet explained that when she found a topic difficult to talk about she had a tendency to smile. Janet felt her smiling was a defense mechanism that she used when she felt uncomfortable.
Robin Roberts asked Janet Jackson if she was aware of Michael's drug use. Janet explained that she and the entire family knew of the situation, they tried an intervention, but they were unsuccessful. "You can lead them to water, but you can't force them to drink. It's up to them to take control."
While Janet Jackson knew of her brothers drug abuse, she was unaware of the powerful drug propofol that was being administered on a regular basis to help Michael sleep. "None of us knew it had went to that extent...it was shocking, it was serious, that's heavy.", was Janet's reaction when she learned of the abuse.
Michael Jackson's doctor, Conrad Murray, became the next focus in Robin's interview with Janet Jackson. Janet had never met Conrad Murray, but he was being paid $150,000.00 a month to take care of Michael. "He was the one administering the drug, I feel he was responsible for Michael's death.", stated Jackson.
Robin Roberts wanted Janet Jackson's thoughts on whether Conrad Murry should be allowed to continue practicing medicine. "I don't feel he should be practicing, so this could happen to someone else? No..unh unh."
Getting back to work has helped Janet Jackson to heal. It has helped her to focus, and get through it.
