times square new years eve 2010

New Year's Rockin' Eve special with Dick Clark? An American tradition continues with the Times Square ball drop at midnight right in the heart of New York City and Clark will be there for his hosting duties, with a little bit of help from the hardest working guy in the business, Ryan Seacrest.
It will be cold, but J Lo may help warm the celebration to ring in the New Year of 2010. American Idol host and Dick Clark 2.0 Ryan Seacrest has convinced Jennifer Lopez to perform live from Times Square on the New Year's Rockin' Eve special he will be hosting alongside Clark.

Seacrest talked to the singer's manager at the AMAs about the deal, but J.Lo still wasn't completely convinced.

Seacrest explains: "It started there [at the AMAs], and then, no kidding, Marc [Anthony] and Jennifer came over to my house and literally walked through what it would be like in Times Square, and now we've got a stage built [in that spot in my house]." "That's exactly what happened. It's a small house!" Seacrest joked.

On TV: Dick Clark's New Year’s Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2010 begins with a one-hour prime-time special at 10 p.m. (9 p.m. CT), and returns at 10:30 p.m. to prep for the ball to drop at midnight.

air force football

The Air Force Falcons are the college football team from the United States Air Force Academy, located just outside of Colorado Springs, Colorado. The team is a mid-major program that competes in NCAA Division I-A and the Mountain West Conference.
Style

Given the physical restrictions that military service puts on cadets, Air Force football has traditionally been based more on speed, willpower and technical execution than on pure size and strength. The Falcons have traditionally run a triple option offense, and have routinely competed favorably against bigger and stronger national opponents. While the wishbone is almost always assumed synonymous with the triple option, Air Force only deployed the formation occasionally under Coaches DeBerry and Hatfield. One mainstay from both of these coaches was the option, and the consistent repetition to near perfection, as witnessed by the wins and the rushing statistics in the past 25 years, regularly placing Air Force in the top ten rushing teams in the nation.
[edit] Falcon Stadium

Falcon home games are played in Falcon Stadium, which sits below the main campus at an elevation of 6621 feet (2018 m) above sea level. Pre-game activities include flyovers by USAF aircraft, including the F-15 and B-2. The highest attendance at a home game was 56,409 spectators in 2002, when the Falcons battled the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.[1]
[edit] History

The Falcons are not only recognized by the lightning bolt on the side of their helmets, but their traditional option attack. Air Force is one of the premier rushing teams in the nation. Since Fisher DeBerry took over as Falcons head coach in 1984, they have ranked among the nation’s top 10 in rushing 19 times in 21 years. The Air Force football team has enjoyed success not only on the field but also in the classroom. In 49 years of Air Force football, there have been 39 Academic All-Americans.[2]
[edit] The 1985 Season

1985 was the most successful season in Air Force football history. Under 2nd year coach Fisher DeBerry, the Fightin’ Falcons came within one win of playing for the national championship. They recorded 10 straight wins, climbed the polls to #2 in the nation, but lost to BYU by 7 points in the penultimate game of the season. Air Force rebounded with a bowl game win over Texas in the Bluebonnet Bowl and finished with a 12-1 record as the #5 ranked team in the nation.

Buddy Nix

Buddy Nix (born December 6, 1939) is currently the General Manager for the Buffalo Bills[1]. He previously was employed by the San Diego Chargers from 1993-2000. Nix was quoted as saying that he was going to play golf, but was open to other offers from other teams.
Early years

Nix was born in Carbon Hill, Alabama where he later attended Talladega High School and played linebacker and fullback at Livingston University.
Coaching career
University of Tennessee at Chattanooga

Nix had a successful college football coaching career with the Chattangooga Mocs.
San Diego Chargers

Nix came to the San Diego Chargers with John Butler and A. J. Smith from the Buffalo Bills where the three were instrumental in building the Bills into NFL contention through the NFL Draft. Butler had died during the Chargers rebuilding years, Smith was promoted to General Manager, and Nix to Assistant General Manager and Director of Player Personnel.

Nix was employed by the Chargers from 1993 to 2000. Nix's job with the Chargers was to oversee both pro and college scouting and to be one of the main decision makers in each NFL Draft. Nix was a major reason the Chargers turned around from a losing football team to a rebuilt, winning team. In 2004, three players Nix drafted were selected to the 2005 Pro Bowl. In 2005, six players Nix drafted were selected to the 2006 Pro Bowl. In 2006, eleven players Nix drafted were selected to the 2007 Pro Bowl. In 2007, eight players Nix drafted were selected to the 2008 Pro Bowl.

Nix is considered by some to be one of the top five talent evaluators in the NFL. The Chargers won four out of the last five AFC West titles with Nix as Assistant GM and Director of Player Personnel, in charge of college scouting and instrumental to the decision making process of their NFL drafts.
Buffalo Bills

Nix was named General Manager of the Buffalo Bills on December 31, 2009, after Russ Brandon was promoted to CEO.

the man who shot liberty valance

he Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is a 1962 Western movie directed by John Ford and starring James Stewart and John Wayne. The black and white film was released by Paramount Pictures and the screenplay by James Warner Bellah and Willis Goldbeck was adapted from a short story written by Dorothy M. Johnson.

In 2007, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

Stewart and Wayne were to be reunited in Wayne's final movie,

Plot

In the late 19th century, a U.S. Senator and his wife have come back to the small town of Shinbone, in an unnamed Western state, in order to attend the funeral of a friend. The senator is prevailed upon by a newspaper editor to explain why he has come to bury an apparent nobody. The senator explains and the film unfolds in flashback to a time before the railroad came to Shinbone and the region was a western territory with statehood the pressing issue.

Ransom "Rance" Stoddard (James Stewart) is an attorney who believes in law and order, but refuses to carry a gun. After graduating from law school, he heads out west to set up a practice in the town of Shinbone. A group of outlaws hold up the stagecoach and Stoddard is brutally beaten and left for dead when he dares to stand up to them. He is later found and taken to town by rancher Tom Doniphon (John Wayne) and is cared for by Hallie (Vera Miles), a woman widely regarded to be the love of Doniphon's life.

It is an open secret that the outlaws are led by Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin) who uses a silver-handled whip as part of his intimidation tactics. Valance and his men often come to town in order to cause disturbances in saloons and restaurants. Local law enforcement in the person of the slovenly and spineless town marshal Link Appleyard (Andy Devine) is helpless to stop him; he excuses his inaction since Valance's crimes were committed outside the city limits.

Doniphon is one of the few people around to stand up to Valance and his men. However, he himself believes that there is no law and that one "needs a gun in these parts." Doniphon feels that Stoddard is a hopeless tenderfoot who is unable to handle himself in the kind of fights that are common in the West. Stoddard in return cannot understand Doniphon's thinking, which is exactly like Liberty Valance's: might makes right.

Valance takes particular delight in humiliating Stoddard who is earning his keep by working as a waiter in a restaurant. He trips him over and orders him to pick up the steak now lying on the floor. Doniphon, who had ordered the steak, tells Valance to pick it up and the stalemate is only resolved by Stoddard picking it up, but making it further inedible. "Nobody fights my battles," he warns Doniphon, who replies with "Well, that was my steak that he ruined."

When Hallie tells Stoddard she can't read or write, he decides to set up a makeshift school. Local children and a number of adults attend including Doniphon's African-American hired hand Pompey (Woody Strode). As part of the lessons, Stoddard lectures them on the benefits of democracy and the Constitution. While standing under a portrait of Abraham Lincoln, Pompey tries to recite the American Declaration of Independence but stumbles on the "all men are created equal" part claiming he "just plum forgot it", to which Stoddard replies: "a lot of people forgot that part".[2] Doniphon is disdainful of the school and interrupts a class to tell Stoddard how Valance and his men have killed two homesteaders.

Valance works for cattle land barons who wish to keep the territory as it is and prevent it from becoming a state that will introduce laws that could undermine their businesses. A convention is held to select two delegates to the territorial capital city. Almost everyone in town attends, with the notable exceptions of Pompey and the women. Valance attempts to bully the townspeople into making him one of the delegates. Stoddard himself nominates Doniphon, but he refuses since he has "personal plans," i.e. marrying Hallie. Stoddard and the alcoholic publisher of the Shinbone Star, Dutton Peabody (Edmond O'Brien), are selected.

After being thwarted in the meeting, Valance challenges Stoddard to a gunfight. He and his men continue to terrorize the town. He nearly beats Peabody to death after the publication of an unflattering article in the newspaper. In response, Stoddard decides that he must go through with the Valance gunfight. Unfortunately, Stoddard is completely unskilled with a gun and no match for the infamous gunfighter. But, when the shootout occurs, Stoddard miraculously kills Valance, a shock to everyone.

Stunned and wounded, Stoddard goes to Hallie, who responds with tearful adoration. Doniphon sees this and remarks that Stoddard "... got outta that fix real handy." Assuming that he has lost Hallie's affection, Doniphon gets drunk in the saloon and drives out Valance's men who have been calling for Stoddard to be lynched. The barman tries to tell Pompey that, as a black man, he cannot be served, to which Doniphon angrily shouts: "Who says he can't? Pour yourself a drink, Pompey". Pompey instead drags Doniphon home, where the latter burns down the house he was building in anticipation of marrying Hallie.

Stoddard becomes legendary as "the man who shot Liberty Valance," a hero. At a convention to pick the delegate to Washington, D.C. to lobby for statehood, Stoddard is nominated but he has guilt pangs about being a killer and capitalizing on an act of violence. It is only then that Doniphon, who has also turned up for the convention, tells him the "true" story: Doniphon, fetched by Pompey on the pleadings of Hallie, and sure that Valance would kill Stoddard, had stood in a nearby side-street and shot Valance with a rifle. It happened that his shot coincided with Stoddard's and Valance's. The fact that he shot the man from a discreet distance without warning means that it was more murder than an actual gunfight and — unlikely though it is — Doniphon might face murder charges on those grounds.

When Stoddard asks why he did it, Doniphon bitterly replies he'd done it to please Hallie, which he now regrets because "she's your girl now."

Stoddard returns to the convention and is chosen as representative. He marries Hallie and enjoys a busy political career, becoming a congressman and serving several terms as Governor of the state and Senator. He even serves a spell as ambassador to Britain and is seen as a potential US Vice-President.

Years later, Tom Doniphon has died, having led a lonely, secluded life. Stoddard and Hallie return for the funeral where they meet old friends like Appleyard and Pompey. Much has changed with the town now having shops and actual schools, irrigation projects etc. Stoddard confesses the whole story for the first time, but the newspaper editor refuses to publish it and burns the notes his reporter took, stating: "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend."

Senator Stoddard and Hallie return to Washington by train, melancholy about the lie that led to their prosperous life. With the area becoming more and more civilized, Stoddard decides, to Hallie's delight, to give up politics, return to the territory and set up a law office.

Stoddard asks a conductor how long it will take to get to Washington. The conductor tells them that the train is traveling at high speed and that at an upcoming junction they are holding the express train for him: "Nothing's too good for the man who shot Liberty Valance."

heisman trophy presentation 2009

The Heisman Trophy presentation 2009 is hours away, as the Downtown Athletic Club crowns a new legend. But the Heisman Trophy presentation 2009 could go to any one of five budding legends, presumably. Some nominees are bigger favorites than most, and this award isn't usually prone to
Heisman Trophy Presentation 2009 Has Higher Drama Than Usual field at the Heisman Trophy presentation this year, as befitting this wide open 2009 season.
Heisman Trophy Presentation 2009 Has Higher Drama Than Usual
If there is a favorite tonight, it is probably Alabama's Mark Ingram. That is due in part to leading the No. 1 team in the nation, to his big performance against Florida last week - and since Alabama may be due for a Heisman Trophy. The Tide are highly decorated, but have never had the best player in the nation in a given year. Ingram is their best hope in a long time to change that.

If star power means anything at the Heisman Trophy presentation, then Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow are favored. In any other circumstances, they might be, since McCoy is due for a Heisman and Tebow is still trying to win two. But Tebow all but killed his chances last week, and McCoy was a second away from destroying his as well. However, McCoy was regarded as the favorite before last week, and took home many College Football Awards on Thursday, so he still has a shot.

The dark horse in the race may be Stanford's Toby Gerhart, the second running back in the race. Gerhart didn't lead his team to a BCS title shot, but carried them on his back to a rare winning season. If the 2009 Heisman race is for the most valuable player to a team, then Gerhart may have a leg up.

But the most electrifying figure at the 2009 Heisman Trophy presentation may be a late contender. Nebraska's Ndamukong Suh has been the best defensive player in years, but had his national coming-out party against Texas last week. That has fueled the call for Suh to win, even though defensive tackles almost never win the award.

adam lambert ama performance video

Adam Lambert's AMA performance of "For your entertainment" is being called risque by some. Lambert shocked some viewers when a male dancer simulated oral sex on him. At the end of Lambert's performance he made out with his male keyboardist.

Lambert seemed very pleased with his AMA performance. He posted on Twitter "All hail freedom of expression and artistic integrity. :) fans: I adore u."

Fan reaction to Adam Lambert's AMA performance seems mixed. Many fans said he was amazing and praised his racy performance for being true to himself. Some AMA viewers are posting negative comments on Twitter, blogs, and YouTube that they are disappointed with Lambert's performance. Some are expressing their disappointment over sexuality being thrown in their faces. Others are criticizing his singing.

If you are one of the people calling his performance awful, remember Lambert performed was live and unlike other musicians in the past he did not lip-sync.

Music awards shows have always had racy performances and really Lambert's is no different. In 2003 Madonna kissed Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the MTV awards. Perhaps, we are not accustomed to seeing a male artist kissing another man or simulating sex acts with another man on stage. If a female artist does the same thing Lambert did then it's sexy and everyone seems to eat it up. Lambert does it and people seemed shocked.

The song "For your entertainment" is about pushing the limits and Lambert did just that. We applaud him for that. If you are shocked by what you saw then maybe you are missing the point of the song.

What did you think of Lambert's performance? Please be sure to comment below and take our poll

senate vote on health care reform

Invoking the memory of Edward M. Kennedy, Democrats united Saturday night to push historic health care legislation past a key Senate hurdle over the opposition of Republicans eager to inflict a punishing defeat on President Barack Obama. There was not a vote to spare.

The 60-39 vote cleared the way for a bruising, full-scale debate beginning after Thanksgiving on the legislation, which is designed to extend coverage to roughly 31 million who lack it, crack down on insurance company practices that deny or dilute benefits and curtail the growth of spending on medical care nationally.

The spectator galleries were full for the unusual Saturday night showdown, and applause broke out briefly when the vote was announced. In a measure of the significance of the moment, senators sat quietly in their seats, standing only when they were called upon to vote.

In the final minutes of a daylong session, Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., accused Republicans of trying to stifle a historic debate the nation needed.

"Imagine if, instead of debating whether to abolish slavery, instead of debating whether giving women and minorities the right to vote, those who disagreed had muted discussion and killed any vote," he said.

The Republican leader, Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, said the vote was anything but procedural — casting it as a referendum on the bill itself, which he said would raise taxes, cut Medicare and create a "massive and unsustainable debt."

For all the drama, the result of the Saturday night showdown had been sealed a few hours earlier, when two final Democratic holdouts, Sens. Mary Landrieu of Louisiana and Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas, announced they would join in clearing the way for a full debate.

"It is clear to me that doing nothing is not an option," said Landrieu, who won $100 million in the legislation to help her state pay the costs of health care for the poor.

Lincoln, who faces a tough re-election next year, said the evening vote will "mark the beginning of consideration of this bill by the U.S. Senate, not the end."

Both stressed they were not committing in advance to vote for the bill that ultimately emerges from next month's debate.

Of particular contentiousness to moderates is a provision for the government to sell insurance in competition with private companies, subject to state approval — a part of Reid's bill expected to come under significant pressure as the debate unfolds.

Even so, their announcements marked a major victory for Reid and the White House in a year-end drive to enact the most sweeping changes to the nation's health care system in a half-century or more.

At the White House, press secretary Robert Gibbs issued a statement saying the president was gratified by the vote, which he says "brings us one step closer to ending insurance company abuses, reining in spiraling health care costs, providing stability and security to those with health insurance, and extending quality health coverage to those who lack it."

The legislation would require most Americans to carry insurance and provide subsidies to those who couldn't afford it. Large companies could incur costs if they did not provide coverage to their workforce. The insurance industry would come under significant new regulation under the bill, which would first ease and then ban the practice of denying coverage on the basis of pre-existing medical conditions.

Congressional budget analysts put the legislation's cost at $979 billion over a decade and said it would reduce deficits over the same period while extending coverage to 94 percent of the eligible population.

At its core, the legislation would create insurance exchanges beginning in 2014 where individuals, most of them lower income and uninsured, would shop for coverage. The bill sets aside hundreds of billions of dollars in tax credits to help those earning up to 400 percent of poverty, $88,200 for a family of four.

The House approved its version of the bill earlier this month on a near party line vote of 220-215, and Reid has said he wants the Senate to follow suit by year's end. Timing on any final compromise was unclear.

All 58 Senate Democrats and two independents voted to advance the bill. All 39 votes in opposition were cast by Republicans. GOP Sen. George Voinovich of Ohio was the only senator not to vote. Montana Sen. Max Baucus, the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee who has labored on health care for more than a year, flew in from his home state on a government plane for the vote and was returning afterward to be with his ailing mother.

While timing made Landrieu and Lincoln the final two Democrats to announce their intentions, Sen. Paul Kirk of Massachusetts had a clear claim as the 60th vote.

Appointed to office this fall after the death of Kennedy, who championed health care issues for decades, Kirk said he spoke for those "who for so many years revered and loved and elected and re-elected (him) ... that I think they're all — they all, as we do, have him in our minds and our hearts tonight. ..."

Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., echoed those sentiments later in the evening when he referred to Kennedy's "lifelong quest" for national health care and said "tonight and in the days to come we will pay him the highest compliment by fulfilling that" goal.

At a post-vote news conference, Reid said he had talked with Kennedy's widow, Vicki, about the vote. "We both said Ted would be happy," Reid said.

In hours of debate before the Saturday evening vote, a few Republicans piled copies of the 2,074-page bill on their desks while others criticized it as a government takeover of health care and worse.

"Move over, Bernie Madoff. Tip your hat to a trillion-dollar scam," said Sen. Kit Bond, R-Mo., likening the bill's supporters to the imprisoned investor who fleeced millions.

In her remarks, Landrieu said, "I've decided that there are enough significant reforms and safeguards in this bill to move forward, but much more work needs to be done." She also touted the $100 million included in the legislation to help her state cover its costs under Medicaid, the state-federal health care program for the poor.

Lincoln referred repeatedly to the political controversy surrounding the issue. She said $3.3 million has already been spent by outside groups advertising either for or against health care legislation in her state, and said, "these outside groups seem to think that this is all about my re-election. I simply think they don't know me very well."

To finance the expanded coverage, Reid proposed higher taxes as well as cuts totaling hundreds of billions of dollars in projected Medicare payments. Hardest hit would be the private insurance Medicare plans, although providers such as home health agencies would also receive significantly less in future years than now estimated.

The bill raises payroll taxes on incomes over $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for couples. Reid eased the impact of an earlier proposal to tax high-value insurance plans, which has emerged as one of the principal methods for restraining the growth in health costs.

The bill includes tax increases on insurance companies, medical device makers, patients electing to undergo cosmetic surgery and drugmakers.

cal stanford big game 2009

STANFORD, Calif. (AP)—When Toby Gerhart arrived at Stanford in 2006 there was more talk about whether the Cardinal should field a major college football team than about the farfetched possibility of going to the Rose Bowl.

Stanford went 1-11 in Gerhart’s freshman year under coach Walt Harris, losing eight games by at least 21 points.

“People laughed at us on campus,” Gerhart said. “We were the laughingstock of the sports program. Now the student section is full each week and they’re fighting to get seats. There are a lot of people believing in Stanford football. It’s a complete 180 from where it was. Stanford football is on the rise.”

So much so that even Tiger Woods will even be on the sideline Saturday as an honorary captain for the biggest Big Game in years.

Led by the running of Gerhart and freshman quarterback Andrew Luck, coach Jim Harbaugh’s 14th-ranked Cardinal (7-3, 6-2 Pac-10) are playing for a chance at the conference title when they host California (7-3, 4-3).

This is the first time since 1991 that both teams enter the rivalry game with at least seven wins.

“You want both opponents to be very high-skilled, highly ranked, you want it to be THE Big Game and I think we’re going to get that this year,” Cal sixth-year offensive lineman Mike Tepper said. “They’re a great opponent so I’m excited.”

Cal struggled for much of the 1990s, as Stanford went to a Rose Bowl following the 1999 season under coach Tyrone Willingham. The tides turned when Willingham left for Notre Dame and Jeff Tedford arrived at Cal.

The Golden Bears have dominated their rivals this decade, winning six of seven since Tedford took over in 2002.

The one loss still haunts the Bears, who lost six of their final seven regular-season games in 2007, including the rivalry game to Stanford in Harbaugh’s first season.

“Losing in ’06 to USC was pretty bad, but losing the Axe in ’07 was the worst feeling I ever had in my life,” Tepper said. “It tears you apart and tears the community apart.”

While Cal is playing for the Axe, Stanford has much more at stake. With a win Saturday and losses down the stretch by Oregon, Arizona and Oregon State, the Cardinal would clinch a Rose Bowl bid.

To get a share of the conference title Stanford just needs to win and hope the Ducks lose one of their final two games to Arizona or Oregon State.

“All I know is that for us to have any chance, we have to beat Cal this week,” Luck said. “That’s all I’m focused on. I haven’t figured everything else out.”

Harbaugh has talked about winning a Pac-10 title and going to a Rose Bowl since the day he arrived on campus, but until the Cardinal beat Oregon and Southern California in back-to-back weeks, there were few believers outside the program.

This week is the third step in what was supposed to be a brutal November stretch that ends with a home game next week against Notre Dame.

“Our mindset has been like an NFL playoff mentality with this game being the championship game,” Harbaugh said. “It’s kind of put up or shut up time. We talked about that last week. It’s that way this week too. If we win, we stay in the hunt for the Pac-10 championship. If we don’t we’re out of it. We haven’t left ourselves any exit strategy.”

Stanford put itself in this position by scoring 106 points in the wins over the Ducks and Trojans. First came a 51-42 victory over then-No. 7 Oregon that put the Cardinal into the Top 25 for the first time in eight years.

They followed that by scoring the most points ever against USC in a 55-21 victory over the then-No. 11 Trojans.

“Those games are no fluke,” Tedford said. “There wasn’t anything fluky about those games. Those were dominating performances. We have our hands full without a doubt.”

One of the biggest problems facing the Cardinal this week seemed unfathomable just a couple years ago: overconfidence.

Harbaugh saw signs of it on Sunday when the players seemed too pleased with themselves after the big win over USC. That started to disappear by the next day and Harbaugh planned to spend the entire week making sure cockiness would not derail Stanford.

For the first time in years, the Cardinal are actually expected to beat the Bears, a welcome change from past years when they could only play spoiler.

“We look forward to that kind of pressure,” Gerhart said. “The season just wouldn’t be a success in a lot of people’s eyes if we don’t win the Big Game. This game is special for the seniors to go out with the Axe and possibly go to the Rose Bowl. This would be big for this program.”

Ann Arbor, Mich. - Jim Tressel has dominated Ohio State 's rivalry with Michigan by smothering it in a warm embrace. It is an approach that captures the best of what rivalry games should be about. But respect is really the core value of rivalry games and the defining characteristic of...

marv albert 50 cent

Marv Albert, the veteran NBA announcer for TNT, was a guest on the "Jimmy Kimmel Live" show. The musical star was rapper 50 Cent. As Albert arrived, with an entourage of one, TNT public relations specialist Jeff Pomeroy, there was a sudden scuffle when a multitude of 50 Cent protectors seemed unfamiliar with Albert. There was shouting ("It's Marv Albert," yelled a Kimmel show guard, a pronouncement that seemed to have no effect on the 50 Cent phalanx.) There were obscenities.

A fist or two flying. A "Don't you put your hands on me" pronouncement.

National Board Certification

National Board Certification, offered by the National Board For Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), is a way to recognize the accomplished teaching that is occurring in North Carolina's classrooms. The certification process is based on high and rigorous standards that evaluates teaching practice through performance-based assessments; the ultimate result is improved performance and achievement for North Carolina's students.

National Board Certification was first offered in 1994, when eight North Carolina teachers received this important professional credential. The number of North Carolina teachers receiving the certification has grown dramatically since then today equaling over 10 percent of North Carolina's teaching force. North Carolina has the highest number of National Board Certified Teachers in the nation.

National Board for Professional Teaching Standards mission is to advance the quality of teaching and learning by:

* maintaining high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do;
* providing a national voluntary system certifying teachers who meet these standards; and
* advocating related education reforms to integrate National Board Certification in American education and to capitalize on the expertise of National Board Certified Teachers.

At the core of the National Board certification process are standards that describe the highest level of teaching in different disciplines and with students at different developmental levels. These standards represent a consensus among accomplished teachers and other education experts about what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do. NBPTS Standards can be found at www.nbpts.org.

Teachers who have participated in National Board Certification have overwhelmingly stated it is the most powerful professional development experience of their careers. They say the experience changes them as professionals and that through the process they deepen their content knowledge and develop, master, and reflect on new approaches to working with their students.

According to research conducted by the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, teachers who have achieved National Board Certification by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) significantly outperform their peers who are not Board Certified on 11 of 13 key dimensions of teaching expertise, according to a study released by the National Board. Based on student work samples, the study's authors declared that National Board Certification "is identifying and certifying teachers who are producing students who differ in profound and important ways from those taught by non-certified teachers."
HOW DO TEACHERS ACHIEVE NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFICATION?

The assessment process for National Board Certification requires candidates to complete two major components: a portfolio of classroom practice including samples of student work and videotapes of teacher instruction, and an assessment of content knowledge administered at a computer-based testing center. It is estimated that the process will take the better part of a school year and involve a total of 200-400 hours of work outside of the classroom.
SUPPORT FROM THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA

State legislation provides support to teachers seeking advanced certification through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, formerly chaired by Governor James B. Hunt Jr. For state-paid teachers with a clear and continuing license and a minimum of three years teaching experience in North Carolina, the state will:

* pay the assessment fee
* provide up to three days of paid release time to candidates
* grant renewal credit for those teachers completing all components of the assessment within the funded assessment cycle; and
* pay National Board Certified Teachers a salary differential (separate salary schedule) of 12% of their state salary for the life of the certificate (10 years).

Federal subsidy funds may also be available to pay for candidates to retake a portion of the National Board Certification process, if necessary. The North Carolina State Board of Education has adopted policy recommendations to:

* adopt the core propositions of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards
* grant a North Carolina teaching license to out-of-state teachers who possess National Board Certification
* create staff development plans that incorporate the work of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in training programs, and
* develop plans to incorporate the National Board's standards into higher education programs.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR STATE FUNDING

The state of North Carolina will pay, up front, the candidate assessment fee for eligible teachers. Teachers do not have to repay the fee as long as they complete the full National Board Certification process and teach the year following completion. Candidates are eligible for state funding if they:

* are paid entirely from state funds
* have completed three full years in North Carolina Public Schools (This includes DOC, DHHS, Office of Juvenile Justice, and public charter schools)
* hold a valid, clear, continuing North Carolina teaching license
* have not previously received State Funds for participating in the NBPTS assessment. (If a candidate received funding, withdrew from the process and fulfilled the repayment obligation, s/he can be funded again.), and
* engage in direct classroom instruction, library/media work, or school counseling 70% of the time over the course of the academic year.

According to TMZ.com, the petite model stripped naked, danced around in the nude and rambled on about a variety of subjects. Among those topics was Merriman, who she claims choked, shoved and humiliated her for her bisexuality during a heated argument in September.

At one point in the Webcast that reportedly lasted several hours, Tequila said that "People call me an attention whore ... or whatever ... but excuse me, I'm a grown a-- woman and I'm confident in myself ... I think a woman's body is a beautiful thing ... that's why I'm a lesbian ... I was born naked ... anybody who is against that is gay and in denial."

She reportedly also called Merriman, a linebacker for the San Diego Chargers, a "woman beater" and accused him of drug use.

uga vii and uga 7

uga vii, uga 7, uga vii and uga 7
The dogs, tended by members of the Seiler family, are present at every Georgia Bulldogs home football game, most away games, and many University-related functions. Uga wears a spiked collar and a red jersey with varsity letter. In 2007, he wore a black jersey for the "Blackout" game against Auburn. Uga is friendly and outgoing, and loves to lick children who attend the games. His jersey is made from the same fabric as the players' official game jerseys. Uga is even issued an official student identification card. Uga travels in an air conditioned dog house and sits on bags of ice at games, as the breed is susceptible to heat stroke (a problem in the humid southeastern United States).

To date, there have been seven dogs to carry the name "Uga", which is derived from an abbreviation for the University of GeorgiA. Each is the son of his predecessor, and each is a solid white English Bulldog. Deceased Ugas are interred in a mausoleum near the main entrance to Sanford Stadium. An epitaph describing each dog graces the mausoleum nameplates. Several Ugas have "retired" as part of elaborate pre-game ceremonies, during which there is a "passing of the bone" and the new Uga begins his reign. Uga even has his own cheer, "Damn good dog!" that the fans shout, during the ceremony. This tradition dates back to the very first Uga.

Although there have been seven Ugas to date, one other bulldog, Otto, from the same family line, has served as the sideline mascot. Uga IV, sidelined with knee ligament damage after jumping off a hotel bed prior to a game against Vanderbilt, was replaced by Otto, compiling a 3–1 record before Uga IV was fit to return to duty. Otto has been named the favorite by former legendary coach Vince Dooley, because he "came off the bench" and got the job done.

Uga VI died of congestive heart failure on Friday, June 27, 2008. Seiler reported that on the evening of his death Uga VI "was breathing heavily" and died soon thereafter. University of Georgia Athletics Director Damon Evans called the date of Uga VI's death "a sad day for the entire Bulldog Nation." As on any sad day for the University of Georgia, the university's flag was flown at half mast. Published reports touted Uga VI's win-loss record in Georgia football as the best in the University's history.[2]

Uga VII was named as "Uga VI's Loran's Best" on Friday August 29, 2008, the day before the school's first home game of the 2008 season. He was officially introduced on Saturday, August 30, 2008, at that game, which UGA won.[3][4] Uga VII died on November 19, 2009, from a heart attack.[5] His doghouse will be vacant, with a wreath placed on it, for the game on November 21 against Kentucky.[6]
Genealogy of Uga namesakes

* Uga I ("Hood's Ole Dan," 1956–1966) – the original, a grandson of a bulldog that accompanied the Georgia football team to its Rose Bowl victory and national championship in 1942. One SEC football title (1959). Uga I had a record of 53–48–6 (winning percentage: 52.3).
* Uga II ("Ole Dan's Uga," 1966–1972) – two Southeastern Conference (SEC) football titles (1966 and 1968) and one national title (1968 Litkenhaus poll). Had a record of 42–16–3 (71.3 percent).
* Uga III ("Seiler's Uga Three," 1972–1981) – presided over Georgia's second consensus national championship season in 1980 and two SEC championships (1976 and 1980). Uga III went 71–32–2 (68.4 percent).
* Uga IV ("Uga III's Magillicuddy/Seiler's Uga Four," 1981–1990) – was the first live mascot ever invited to a Heisman trophy presentation in 1982 when, while wearing a tux, Uga IV accompanied Herschel Walker to the Downtown Athletic Club; two SEC championships (1981 and 1982). Uga IV had a record of 77–27–4 during his tenure (73.1 percent).
o Otto ("The Substitute," 1986) – When Uga IV injured his left hind knee jumping off a hotel bed before a contest against Vanderbilt in 1986 his older brother Otto replaced him for four games, going 3–1 (75 percent).[7]
* Uga V ("Uga IV's Magillicuddy II," 1990–1999) – portrayed his father, Uga IV, in the motion picture Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and was on the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1997;[8] propelled to the national spotlight when he lunged at an Auburn wide receiver, Robert Baker, during a game in 1996. Had a record of 65–39–1 (62.4 percent).
* Uga VI ("Uga V's Whatchagot Loran," 1999–2008) – two SEC championships (2002 and 2005), two Sugar Bowl victories (2003 and 2008), and more than 20 victories over ranked opponents, more than any Uga before him. Uga VI was also larger than any of his predecessors, weighing in at 65 pounds. However, most notable is Uga VI's record of 87–27 during his nine seasons, the most of any Uga (76.3 percent).
* Uga VII ("Uga VI's Loran's Best," 2008–2009)[9] – Uga VII's final record was 16–7 (69.6 percent); his tenure ended abruptly when he suffered a heart attack on November 19, 2009.

The names "Magillicuddy" and "Whatchagot Loran" were given in honor of longtime Georgia icons Dan Magill and Loran Smith, respectively (when former lead radio announcer Larry Munson called Smith for a sideline report, he asked "Whatchagot Loran?").

Alexandra Kerry See Through Dress

Alexandra Kerry See Through Dress,Alexandra Kerry's See-Through Dress
The family members of politicians don't generally receive this much exposure, but Alexandra Kerry — daughter of Masschusetts senator and presumptive 2004 Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry — did in May 2004 when she attended a Cannes Film Festival event wearing the sheer, translucent black gown pictured above.

Alexandra Kerry, a 30-year-old actress and documentary filmmaker, was in Cannes to present her short film, "The Last Full Measure." On 16 May she walked the red carpet at Cannes to attend the premiere of Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill 2 wearing a black off-shoulder dress that, under the glare of numerous photographer's flashes, revealed her bra-less chest. (Sometimes fabrics and styles that appear modest in the dressing room turn out to be unexpectedly revealing when subjected to unusual or harsh lighting, so not every exposure of this nature is necessarily a deliberate example of exhibitionism.)

The image shown here, captured by photographer Pascal Guyot and distributed by the Agence France Presse (AFP) news service, appeared in a variety of European and U.S. newspapers, some of which covered up Ms. Kerry's breasts or cropped the picture at her neck.

Great American Smokeout 2009

Great American Smokeout 2009
The American Cancer Society holds the Great American Smokeout® every year on the third Thursday in November. This year the Great American Smokeout® will take place on November 19, 2009. The purpose of the event is to set aside a day to help smokers quit smoking, quit using tobacco products, for at least one day, with the hope that they will quit completely.

Not only does the event challenge people to stop using tobacco, it helps to raise awareness about the dangers of smoking and the many effective ways available to quit smoking permanently.

Research shows that smokers are most successful in kicking the habit when they have some means of support, such as nicotine replacement products, counseling, prescription medicine to lessen cravings, guide books, and the encouragement of friends and family members.1

How It Started
In 1971, Arthur Mullaney, a Massachusetts resident, asked people to give up smoking for a day and to donate the money they would have spent on tobacco to a local high school. Lynn Smith, editor of the Monticello Times, led the charge to create Minnesota's first D-Day (Don't Smoke Day). The idea gained momentum; and, the California chapter of the American Cancer Society encouraged nearly one million smokers to quit for the day on November 18, 1976. With the success in California, the ACS took the event nationwide in 1977.

How We Can Help
Prevention Partners can help you to offer support to those trying to quit smoking and education to those who have yet to start (our kids) through our wide range of products with positive messages that speak out against smoking and tobacco use.
Our products carry positive messages that you can use, not only for the Great American Smokeout®, but also for other anti-smoking and tobacco prevention campaigns, like National Kick Butts Day or World No Tobacco Day.

Prevention Partners began offering products with positive messages to support tobacco prevention efforts in 1999. Given the importance of promoting these messages among our youth and children, especially given the proliferation of children experimenting with tobacco and smoking at increasingly earlier ages, Prevention Partners continues to create products that appeal to young people.

Dyson Dc21 Stowaway Canister Vacuum

dyson dc21 stowaway canister vacuum
Dyson has several top-rated upright vacuums on the market, but has made only a few canister models, including the now-discontinued Dyson DC21 Stowaway. Reviewers were impressed by this bagless canister vacuum's futuristic look and advanced technology, including cyclonic suction and a pop-out dust bin. It did well in independent testing, especially on bare floors; some owners say its performance on carpet is just so-so. Current Dyson canister vacuums include the Dyson DC22 Turbinehead (*Est. $700), the Dyson DC22 Motorhead (*Est. $800), the Dyson DC23 Turbinehead (*Est. $400) and the Dyson DC23 Motorhead (*Est. $600).

The Dyson DC21 Stowaway canister vacuum is included in the latest round of independent testing from ConsumerReports.org. The U.K.-based Which? magazine covers the DC21 Stowaway, as well. We did find a detailed write-up at the Canadian website Future Shop, but it's not clear if the writer actually tried out this vacuum. Amazon.com and Epinions.com have a few dozen very positive user reviews between them.
